The Secret Place

This year has been a rollercoaster – what about for you guys? This year I published my first short story, started witnessing God’s signs and wonders, got married, discovered my home church, and experienced my dad’s passing.

I hope that none of you have to experience the turbulence and pain of GBM, but if you have, my heart goes out to you. In 2021, my dad received the GBM diagnosis, and in March 2023, he went back home with Papa God. Although I’m at peace with everything, it all still feels a bit surreal. It’s as if a part of me somehow believes that he’s on an extended trip somewhere, and that any day he’ll march through the front door like, “Mija, quiero cafe.” (He really loved his coffee – guess it runs in the family)

Loss and grief can be strange.

Nonetheless, the secret place (and my dad) taught me that I don’t have to be strong all on my own. I wrote this drabble in honor of that. Hope you like it.

My father, however, took our hands in prayer. Together, we spoke with Jesus daily.

In the year that followed, we watched him blossom like an evening primrose.

We, too, followed suit.

Through his unwavering faith, I learned I was wrong; the most powerful words on earth are, ‘God loves us.’
